  • A check might be lost in the mail so we requested that Taryn cancel it as it was over
$18,000 (for Collection Systems Conference expenses). Other people with reimbursements in the same batch have already received their checks in the mail.

·President Report: Emily Dong

  • In attendance. No report.

·Vice-President Report: Staci Taniguchi

  • Staci introduced Roger Babcock as the 2016-2017 Secretary-Treasurer nominee and Jon Baker as the 2016-2017 PWO Rep nominee. Staci asked for other nominations from the floor and requested a motion to vote.
  • Eassie was concerned about the lack of membership in attendance (only 15 members in attendance). Lance motioned to defer the vote until the General Meeting at the Pacific Water Conference. Emily seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
  • Announced upcoming PWC Service Event at Malama Maunalua. RSVP date has passed but more volunteers are welcome.
  • Brad Wong from the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, Office of Hawaiian Affairs (Program Specialist) and Polynesian Voyaging Society, presented He wa’a he moku, he moku he wa’a (a canoe is an island, and an island a canoe), a discussion on the importance of water in Hawaii:
    • Hokulea’s mission is to spread knowledge worldwide about protecting the environment.
    • After Hawaiian lost authority in the islands, oral history was banned and therefore valuable knowledge of environmental management was also lost.
    • The term “wai” permeates throughout Hawaiian culture and language, it has much value physically and figuratively. “Wai wai” means prosperity.
    • Ola i ka wai - There is life in the waters (Kāneikawaiola – god of creation)
    • The Mele of Water (The Water of Kane) asks, “Where are the waters of Kane?”. Water is everywhere, in the mountaintops, the ground and the ocean (see http://www.sacred-texts.com/pac/ulh/ulh45.htm for entire script).
    • In Hawaiian culture, the environment was considered a priority in major decisions, now major decisions usually prioritize money, “the economy”.
    • “Aina” means more than land, it can be a spiritual term, or represent the ocean, or that which feeds us.
    • Native plants are the best at capturing trade wind vapor and transferring it to the soil and streams.
    • In Samoa, the streams are dominated with native plants and they appear very clean, at least in terms of sediment and turbidity.
    • Native Hawaiian footprint on Oahu used to be 14.1%, now the human footprint is 83%.
    • Native Hawaiian agriculture had fed 400,000 people, now we can only feed a small portion of that number (10%) and ship in most products.
    • Previously there were only a few groups that cared for each moku/ahupua’a, now there are several landowners and stakeholders in each ahupua’a. This makes management issues and communication more complicated.

  • Lance is heading to Orlando, FL for WEFMAX in March.

  • Need to plan for incoming Delegate as his term is almost up.
