The Water Environment Federation Technical and Exhibition Conference (WEFTEC) was hosted in Chicago, September 30 to October 4, 2023.

One of the highlights of WEFTEC was the Operations Challenge where teams of four compete to earn the highest score in different events. Scores are determined by the accuracy of tasks performed and the time used to complete the event. Time penalties are provided for each item not completed and an overall maximum time is allotted for the event. These events are designed to test the diverse skills required for the operation and maintenance of treatment facilities, collection systems, and laboratories.

The Annual Pacific Water Conference is scheduled for February 21-22, 2024 with the Pre-Conference on February 20. During this conference, the HWEA is anticipating having a version of the Operations Challenge so that the association may have a representative at WEFTEC 2025 being held in New Orleans.
