HWEA/AWWA Young Professionals (YP) Film Event
By Dayna Fujimoto
The HWEA/AWWA Young Professionals (YP) hosted a film event on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the HDR/HPE conference room in downtown Honolulu. Both YP and non-YP members of HWEA and AWWA attended the event to watch the 90 minute documentary called “FLOW – For the Love of Water”. While enjoying pizza and chips, viewers learned about critical water issues and the growing privatization of water around the world.
The evening concluded with a surprise commentary from special guests, Elson Gushiken and Eldon Franklin. YPs learned of the wealth of Elson’s and Eldon’s knowledge and experience as they shared with us some of the history of water in Hawaii and inspired us to become more involved in the engineering community. We thank them for joining us and for their inspiring words of wisdom.
Special thanks to HDR for letting us use their conference room, laptop, and projector. Thank you to ASCE YMF for sponsoring the cost of parking and to Troy Ching for reserving the conference room for us.

The AWWA|HWEA Young Professionals (YP) held a general meeting on August 30, 2010 at Hukilau Café in downtown Honolulu. The main purpose of the meeting was the gather feedback from other members regarding what activities they would like to participate in and how YP could be improved. There was a strong interest in tours relating to water and wastewater facilities. Other interesting ideas for activities included ghost tours, hikes, and joint activities with ASCE Younger Member Forum (YMF). Upcoming potential events including the YMF Make-a-Difference Day and the University of Hawaii, College of Engineering Career Fair were announced.
Overall, the meeting was a success. YP members enjoyed some pupus while discussing new ideas for future YP activities. The meeting was a great networking tool to meet new people and catch up with old classmates.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for the end of this year. All YP members are encouraged to participate. An announcement will be sent out in the next few months.
